Liberian Police Southeastern Commander Assures All Candidates Protection

HARPER, Liberia- The newly inducted county commander of the Liberia National Police detachment in Grand Gedeh County has promised to ensure none violent election, with the December 8 Special Senatorial election just over one month away.

Police Superintendent, Moses Gberyan, who is acting regional commander of Southeastern Liberia said he will work with every candidate contesting seats, in order to ensure peaceful election in Grand Gedeh and other southeastern counties.

Grand Gedeh County’s capital, Zwedru was the scene of pre-election violence earlier this year, when angry anti-opposition mob stormed the hotel where the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) leader, Alexander Cummings and Montserrado County Representative, Yekeh Kolubah were lodged on a visit to that area.

But so far, there has been no arrest, though the Liberian government had promised to investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Police Commander Gberyan said that with the support of other joint security actors, the county local authorities and other stakeholders, there will be peace in the county election.

“Even though we are under manpower, but we will try our possible best to assign officers to every political rallies, meetings and even the day of voting to every polling centers in order to maintain our peace of the Republic,” the police acting southeastern regional Commander Gberyan told citizens.

The Police Superintendent was speaking during his induction ceremony held during the week in Zwedru.

His induction was witnessed by a cross-section of citizens, including the county local leadership, the business community, the transport union leaders, youth and women’s groups, as well as the Traditional Council.

Speaking on behalf of the youth of Grand Gedeh, Eric Destiny Saydee, said promised that they will collaborate with the joint security leadership, only if they are in handling minor and major cases before during and after the pending polls.

For his part, Grand Gedeh County Superintendent, Kai Garlo Farley promised good working relationship with the police superintendent, Moses Gberyan.

He was a deputy police commander to Joshua During who had served the county for over three years.

Police Superintendent During took new assignment to the headquarters of Liberia National Police in Monrovia.
