Liberia has reported zero deaths related to the Mpox outbreak, with 19 recoveries recorded and 12 new confirmed cases of the disease, Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan, the Director-General of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) disclosed in Monrovia recently.
Addressing a news conference in Monrovia, Dr. Nyan announced 12 new confirmed cases of Mpox, putting the total number of confirmed cases to 22.
He assured the public that the situation is being closely monitored and managed, with the full commitment of NPHIL’s expert team in collaboration with its partners.
He also noted that Liberia has made significant progress in its ability to respond to the outbreak, as the country is now capable of conducting genomic sequencing, which has been critical in tracking the spread of the virus.
Two distinct clades of the Mpox virus have been detected in Liberia: CLADE II A and CLADE II B. The detection of CLADE II B was made possible through sequencing conducted within the country, marking a significant advancement in Liberia’s public health capabilities.
In addition to the Mpox response, Dr. Nyan highlighted that NPHIL is actively managing other public health challenges, including outbreaks of Lassa Fever and Measles.
He assured the public that the Institute’s team is working tirelessly to contain and mitigate the impact of these diseases as well.
Dr. Nyan reaffirmed NPHIL’s dedication to protecting the health of all Liberians, emphasizing that the Institute management team remains committed to living up to the trust and confidence placed in it by the Government of Liberia, under the leadership of President Joseph Boakai.
NPHIL continues to collaborate with local and international partners to strengthen Liberia’s response capabilities and safeguard public health.
