Monrovia—The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has lauded the Government for its commitment to advancing the health and rights of women and young people and the country’s remarkable journey toward stability and development, a UNFPA press release said on Monday, September 16, 2024.
UNFPA West and Central Africa Regional Director Dr. Sennen Hounton, during a five-day visit to Liberia from 08-14 September 2024, said UNFPA appreciates its robust partnership with the Government of Liberia.
The UNFPA West and Central Africa Regional Director praised Liberia as a “beacon of hope” and a “regional champion,” recognizing the significant strides the nation has made following years of challenges in governance. He noted the successful peaceful transition of power and emphasized the importance of the population and housing census, which is crucial for national development and planning.
“The UN is here to amplify the message that we have an opportunity for a brighter future for Liberia and the entire region,” said the UNFPA Regional Director. “Investing in the health and well-being of the population, especially women and youth, is essential for sustainable development,” he added.
The UNFPA West and Central Africa Regional Director toured several UNFPA-supported sites in Rivercess and Bong counties, including a youth center, a maternity clinic in Rivercess County, and a midwifery school in Bong County. Dr. Hounton said these visits underscored UNFPA’s commitment to enhancing health services, empowering youth, and advancing gender equality in Liberia.

During his visit to the St. Francis Hospital Youth-friendly Center in Cestos City, the young people called for the continued delivery of the ongoing programme to provide them with access to information and services for making informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health and rights. They stressed that such access, particularly for girls, is vital for achieving their potential and breaking the cycle of poverty. They also highlighted the negative impact of unplanned pregnancies on their rights and futures.
In response, the UNFPA West and Central Africa Regional Director emphasized the importance of empowering young people through comprehensive sexuality education and quality reproductive health services, noting that adolescent pregnancy is a developmental challenge tied to poverty and gender inequality.
He commended President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for engaging with youth, prioritizing the reduction of maternal deaths, and addressing substance abuse among young people. Dr. Hounton reaffirmed UNFPA’s commitment to collaborating with all stakeholders to ensure a healthier future for Liberia’s youth, who are the country’s future.
The UNFPA West and Central Africa Regional Director met with authorities at relevant government ministries, including the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, and the Ministry of Health. He also engaged with Senator Dabah Varpilah, Chair of the Senate Health Committee and Chair of the Legislative Forum on Population and Development, local leaders, health workers, and community members, fostering discussions on the future importance of continued collaboration to promote reproductive health, family planning, and maternal health services.
