Canadian charity begins free treatment for brain tumor, other surgeries in Liberia

Free surgeries on Patients with brain tumor, spinal and other illnesses are expected to benefit from free surgeries expected to begin soon in Liberia by a Canadian charity.

The Canadian Charity, Korle Bu Neuroscience Foundation (KBNF) in collaboration with the MOH, the John F. Kennedy Memorial Medical Center and the Jackson F. Doe Memorial Regional Referral hospital and the Neurosurgical Outreach Mission has announced that the free surgeries will begin next month, August 2019.

The Jackson F. Doe hospital is the only referral hospital in Tappita, Liberia’s northeastern Nimba County.

According to a statement, the team of Neurosurgeons are coming from Canada, USA, Ghana, Nigeria and Liberia.

The medical specialists will treat brain tumors, spinal (back) illnesses, hydrocephalus (water in the head), spinal bifida (knot on the back), severe and persistent headaches, late onset seizures, late onset of weakness of the hands and feet, carpal tunnel syndrome (pain in the wrist), spinal cord injury, neck pain, encephalocele (knot on the head) etc.

Pre-screening is currently said to be ongoing at JFK in Monrovia and at JFD in Tappita from Monday to Friday.

A minimal consultation fee is being charged by the collaborating hospitals.Patients will be responsible for all labs and imaging.

ALL SURGERIES WILL BE DONE FREE OF CHARGE, the announcement says.
