The Young Women’s Actions for Rights, Peace and Development (YWARPD) have signed a grant agreement with the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) to receive emergency fund to support its work.
A YWARPD press release said that in March this year, the Global Democracy launched its Emergency Support Fund, aimed at providing immediate financial relief to coalition partners impacted by the U.S. aid cuts.
The scope of the Emergency Support Fund covers three main areas of eligible funding to support GDC partner organizations affected by the U.S. aid cuts. First, the fund may be used to cover staff salaries for key personnel who are directly engaged in democracy-related initiatives, ensuring that critical expertise and institutional knowledge are retained during this period of financial uncertainty. Second, it supports programmatic continuity, including essential advocacy, outreach, and research activities that align with the Coalition’s mission. Third, the fund allows for strategic capacity-building to enhance the long-term effectiveness and resilience of partner organizations working to advance democratic values.
As part of the process, partners of GDC applied for the funds and their applications were evaluated by evaluation committee, composed of representatives from six GDC partner organizations,
Meanwhile, the Executive Director of YWARPD, Ms Richelle Allison, has commended GDC for launching the funds, which came at a time her organization was facing serious challenges as a result of the delay in receiving support from its main partner, National Endowment for Democracy (NED). She said that the funds will be used to provide administrative support to YWARPD as well as to support its ongoing Youth Democracy Initiative Program
YWARPD was established in 2022 and focuses on empowering young women through civic education, research, and advocacy to promote their rights, peacebuilding, and sustainable development. YWARD’S’s work includes advancing gender equality, and ensuring young women’s participation in decision-making processes, including local democracy and peacebuilding efforts.
