After Embattled Speaker Koffa’s Resignation, Election Of A New Speaker On Today’s Agenda

As House Of Rep. 1st Day Sitting After The Easter Break

Monday’s resignation of embattled Speaker, Cllr. Fonati Koffa has apparently cleared the way for the election of a Speaker of Liberia’s House of Representatives, as this has been put on the agenda for today’s opening of the lower House.

Cllr. Koffa on May 12, 2025 announced he was stepping down at a news conference in Monrovia.

“I am constrained to tender my resignation as presiding officer of the House of Representatives, Speaker, and head of the first branch of government. As you are aware, on Wednesday, the 23rd of April, the Supreme Court ruled in the Bill of Information that the election of Rep. Richard Koon is illegal, thereby making it purported and then reconfirming my legitimacy as Speaker; however, I have to resign,” Cllr. Koffa said in his official letter of resignation to Chief Clerk of the House Madam Mildred Siryon.

Koffa voluntarily left his post even though the Full Bench of the Supreme Court of Liberia weeks ago ruled to affirm his Bill of Information declaring him the legitimate Speaker, while urging the “majority bloc’s” move to vote Montserrado County District #11 Representative, Richard Nagbe Koon as unconstitutional.

The election of a speaker is placed on the House agenda published on the House of Representatives official website today, May 13, 2025:
