Says The Africa Center For Strategic Studies
Spikes in militant Islamist violence in the Sahel and Somalia have resulted in a 48-percent increase in fatalities linked to these groups over the past year, says a new report by the Africa Center for Strategic Studies
The 19,109 people who perished from this violence eclipses the previous peak set in 2015 when Boko Haram was at its height. The Sahel and Somalia accounted for 77 percent of all episodes of militant Islamist-linked violence in Africa in 2022.
In this annual review of the continental trends of militant Islamist violence, “Fatalities from Militant Islamist Violence in Africa Surge by Nearly 50 Percent,” the Africa Center for Strategic Studies distills the key features of this evolving threat across its five primary theaters: the Sahel, Somalia, the Lake Chad Basin, northern Mozambique, and North Africa.
