Advises American Citizens To Be Aware Of The Current Problem
Despite efforts being made by authorities to address security and other issues relating to the airport’s operations after recent audits, eyebrows are still being raised about safety and emergency capabilities at Liberia’s only international Airport, RIA, which is located outside the Liberian capital.
The latest concern is coming from the United States Embassy in Monrovia today, Thursday. Earlier concerns were raised by major airlines flying into Liberia.
Last year, there were a number of reports of poor safety and other issues including electricity black outs and faults with some navigational equipment at the Roberts International Airport.
One of such incidents was in late March 2022, President Weah and other government officials flew in to a dark airport upon their arrival into the country from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
In a security alert dated February 2, 2023, the US Embassy said, “several airport safety, security, and emergency response capabilities remain below international standards.”

Security Alert – U.S. Embassy Monrovia, Liberia (February 2, 2022)
Location: Monrovia, Liberia
Event: The U.S. Embassy in Monrovia is aware of several recent audits of Roberts International Airport (RIA), all of which have revealed significant shortcomings in airport safety, security, and operational standards. We are aware that RIA, the Liberia Airport Authority, and the Liberia Civil Aviation Authority have begun steps to address these shortcomings in recent months. However, U.S. citizens contemplating air travel into or out of RIA, which is Liberia’s only international airport, should be aware that few if any of these shortcomings have been adequately resolved to date, and that several airport safety, security, and emergency response capabilities remain below international standards. The Embassy is not aware that airlines have reduced operating schedules to RIA in response to these audit findings. We will update this message should we become aware of any such plans.
