PUL Again Urges Presidential Committee To Probe State Security Attacks On Journalists

(Last Updated On: )

Monrovia-The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has reiterated calls for the presidential investigative committee, mandated to probe attacks against journalists by some state security personnel to commence the investigation into the matter.

The PUL maintains that the issue of Coronavirus cited by the committee’s chairman Dr. Lawrence K Bropleh as factor for not commencing the investigation is not enough, said a PUL press release on Monday, April 27, 2020.

The Union believes that various health measures instituted by government and the use of technology can allow the Bropleh led committee to investigate the matter fully.

President George M. Weah recently constituted the committee following a protest and a petition complaining to government about brutality against some journalists by state security.

A PUL release quotes President Charles B Coffey Jr. as saying, that the inability of the presidential committee to speed up with the investigation has the propensity to create psychological effect on the performance of those who were attacked by the security personnel, describing the situation as worrisome.

Mr. Coffey insisted that members of the committee have the expertise to conduct a comprehensive investigation using available technology.

The PUL President asserts that conducting speedy investigation will reveal the truth and bring perpetrators to justice.

According to him, the leadership of the PUL will not compromise the norms and core values of union aimed at ensuring the safety and protection of journalists and Media workers at all times no matter the prevailing condition.

Meanwhile, a committee set up by the PUL has since commenced cross examination of the affected journalists and the collection of data to enhance the work of the presidential investigative committee.
