PUL Demands Action Against Police For Assaulting Journalists

The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) is demanding an appropriate administrative action against the police officer who battled and assaulted journalists who covered the recent protest at the ST Moses Funeral Parlours.

The Union believes that such action will sent strong message of the government commitment to ending impunity against journalists, says a PUL press release signed by its Secretary General Musa Kenneh on Thursday, November 12, 2020.

On Wednesday, the PUL termed as inhumane, disturbing,  and unacceptable the physical assault, battle and humiliation of Journalists at the ST. Moses Funeral Parlor in Gardnersville allegedly by the Liberia National Police (LNP)

Journalists Zayzay Ballah of Bush Chicken Newspaper and other journalists were attacked while covering the protest at the ST. Moses funeral Parlor  during the morning hours on Tuesday.

The umbrella group for Liberian Journalists maintained that the administrative action will also serve as a deterrence to wound be violators of the rights of Journalists in the police force.

The Union assured it members that it will not rest until the officer in question is brought to justice for his assault and humiliation against the Journalists.

The days of security officers flogging journalists and go with impunity are gone and would not be condoned in the 21st century.

The President of the PUL has made several representations at the Headquarters of the Liberia National Police demanding action against the officer involved.

The journalists were battled and assaulted by the police while camera along with Fortune TV were forcibly seized by the police.

The Union believes that the action of the police was intended to prevent the media from video taping the protest at the ST Moses Funeral Parlours.
