Tragedies In Lofa And Gbarpolu Counties: Falling Tree Kills Woman, Man Murdered

A report from Tormadu, Lofa County in northwestern Liberia says a 26-year-old woman identified as Hawa Kortu has been killed after a tree fell on her house.

The incident happened on October 7, 2020 at 12:00 Pm GMT.

She was a member of the Kissi ethnic group and a resident of Foya Statutory District.

The deceased, Hawa said to have been preparing rice for cooking, but while in the process, the house collapsed on her from the falling tree, killing her instantly.

One of the two other persons in the house was injured and is in hospital, while the other escaped unhurt.

Gbarpolu homicide case

In Gbarpolu County, northwest of Monrovia, a man, 55 has allegedly killed by a 31-year-old man said to be “stranger father from Manawallah town Korninga Chiefdom, Bopolu District.

The suspect, Moses Kollie allegedly murdered Harris Pokai while arguing over hot water to bathe.

According to eye witness account, the deceased came from the bush and met the alleged suspect cooking his one cup of rice and demanded the accused to remove his rice from the fire on grounds that he wanted to put water on fire for bathing.

But the accused reportedly told him to wait for his rice to get dry, something the deceased could not accept and went in the house for water to put it on the fire at all cost, sparking a feud.

 

As he insisted that he would not remove the rice from the fire, the confusion intensified and fist fight erupted between the victim and suspect Kollie.

But Pokai was overpowered, as Kollie used the burning firewood to beat him up on his head. He later collapsed and died.

After the death of Pokai, an angry crowd pursed suspect Kollie, but he was rescued by the community watch forum and subsequently turned over to the police in the area, who are started investigation into the case.

.Suspect Kollie is being detained at the Bopolu police station, pending court trial.
