ALICOR Calls Boakai Gov’t Attention To “Direct Attack Against Press Freedom” In Grand Gedeh County

(Last Updated On: )

Says Harassment And Intimidation Continuing Against Smile FM Community Radio By The County’s Leadership

The Association of Liberia Community Radio (ALICOR) is deeply troubled by the ongoing harassment and intimidation directed against the management and staff of Smile FM by Superintendent Alex Grant and his collaborators.

ALICOR is particularly alarmed by the recent action taken by Superintendent Grant, which led to the shutdown of Smile FM—a community radio station that serves as an alternative voice for the people of Grand Gedeh County. This action appears to be an attempt to silence independent media through the use of political power and influence.

According to ALICOR President Hector Mulbah, it is disappointing that Superintendent Grant continues to target Smile FM despite several dialogues involving the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Grand Gedeh Legislative Caucus, and the Grand Gedean Citizens Association in the Americas.

ALICOR is taken aback by the Superintendent’s action, especially as it contradicts the recent commitment made by President Joseph Boakai during the Presidential Media Dinner, where he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to press freedom.

ALICOR condemns the arbitrary closure of Smile FM and views it as a direct attack on press freedom. We call for the immediate reopening of the station and urge the relevant authorities to guarantee the safety and protection of the journalists involved.

ALICOR calls on all journalists across Liberia to stand in solidarity with Smile FM, says an ALICOR press release signed by Secretary General, Emmanuel Degleh.
