The University of Liberia Faculty Association (ULFA) has spoken out strongly against frequent violent attacks on Faculty, public officials, students and visitors on the campuses of the state-owned university, after a fresh attack on a Finance Ministry employee this week.

“The ULFA leadership therefore calls on the UL Administration to institute immediate investigation into the recent attack on Mr. Aloysius Howe and all other attacks and bring the perpetrators to order with the strongest deterrent to future perpetrators,” says an ULFA press statement signed by its Secretary General, Eric T.S Patten today, Wednesday, March 8, 2023.

Mr. Howe, who is an official in the office of the Liberian Finance Minister and also a former UL student leader, had to flee the University’s Capitol Hill campus after a group of students began throwing stone and engaging in angry chants. The windscreen of his vehicle is said to have been smashed.

This week’s attack has generated a big debate both on the UL campus and nationally on local radio talk shows.

PRESS STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE!

The University of Liberia Faculty Association (ULFA) is wary of unsolicited attacks on Faculty, Public Officials, Students and Visitors alike by rampaging students on the campuses of the University of Liberia (UL). ULFA therefore condemns these unwarranted actions in the strongest terms possible.

It can be recalled that similar actions were carried out against the Vice President of the Republic of Liberia, Chief Dr. Jewel Howard Taylor on January 25, 2023 by rampaging students while she attended the launch of the UL Fisheries Program.

The leadership of ULFA wishes to remind all students at the Nation’s Institution of higher learning that it is their responsibility to contribute to the civility of society. Thus, attacking someone because of their association and alignment or particular ideology is the least intellectual weapon anyone can use. Violence is never a solution to any problem and should never be a hall mark of students whom we are grooming to become future leaders of our country.

The ULFA leadership therefore calls on the UL Administration to institute immediate investigation into the recent attack on Mr. Aloysius Howe and all other attacks and bring the perpetrators to order with the strongest deterrent to future perpetrators.
