A group of vulnerable people, mainly elderly women residing in District #1, Margibi County have expressed dissatisfaction over allegedly being abandoned by government in the wake of the ongoing lockdown due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Duazon is situated nearly 30 miles from Monrovia on the highway leading to Liberia’s Roberts International Airport.
According to the women, politicians would pretend to be in their interest when they are soliciting their votes, but when they get power they no longer care about their wellbeing.
They said at this difficult time when they can barely get food and other basic necessities, they desperately need assistance, something that is so far not forthcoming.
During a tour of several communities in the District on Wednesday April 15, 2020, this Reporter observed that several homes lack bucket with soap and water for handwashing, which are intended prevent the spread of the killer virus.
The women said that they have heard that President George Weah had forwarded a State of Emergency proposition to the Legislature to redirect US$25 million in the national budget for emergency food and other rations,
And they are demanding that their lawmakers make sure that they benefit from such move.
A spokesperson for the vulnerable Duazon women, Madam Martha Singba said: “We were involved in petty trade, buying goods from the Grand Bassa Highway and taking them back to our community market just to sell and feed themselves and their children. But now, we’re going through quarantine since the pronouncement of the State Of Emergency by the President for 21days.”
But Margibi County District #1 Representative, Tibelrosa Tarponweh told us via mobile phone that his office has been working and carrying out distribution of buckets and others materials in the area.
But he said they have been finding it difficult to get a census of how many vulnerable people and groups in the district.
He however assured that his office will do all in his power to meet with the groups.
