TUBMANBURG, Liberia- “We need help,” say scores of Persons living with Disabilities (PWDs) solicit support, as they embark on a self-help project here in the Western Bomi County.

In a clear move to back up the saying that “disability is not inability”, scores of persons with disabilities in Bomi have embarked on a self-empowerment project in the County.

When completed, the building will contain a state -of-the-art building that consists of guest rooms, conference hall and offices, is aimed improving the wellbeing of PWDs in the County.

The project, which is estimated to cost US$15,000 (Fifteen Thousand USD), will serve as “a reservoir of income generation” for persons with disabilities in Bomi County.

Giving the overview of the initiative, Anthony Dangan, the coordinator noted that, the dream of the project started some two years ago when PwDs saw the need to undertake a project that will give them some level of independence in the society.

Mr. Dangan, explained that persons with disabilities Bomi County are tired engaging in street begging with no benefits but, only to end up being marginalize by the public.

He pointed out that the current project is to disprove the widespread belief that disability is inability, terming such statement as a total misconception.

At the same time, the PwDs Tubmanburg project coordinator has lamented that persons with disabilities are not giving the needed support in the Liberian society. As the result, he said that many of them are left with no alternative but to venture in begging on the streets, something he noted at times lead to the loss of their lives while moving between speeding vehicles.

Mr. Dangan is using this medium to encourage his colleagues to be positive that their lives will improve, describing PwDs as useful and productive citizens in every community.

The head of the Tubmanburg project then commended the Christian Association of the Blind (CAB) family headed by Mr. Beyan Kota for their little they are doing to improve the lives of persons with disabilities.

But Mr. Dangan is welcoming other support.

He then called on Humanitarian organizations, the government of Liberia to assist them in visualizing the dream of their project.
