Gov’t Immediately Imposes Strict COVID-19 Measures, But Lockdown May Follow Later

In line with the new Health Law, Liberia’s Ministry of Health has released a revised COVID-19 Guidelines, which are to take immediate effect to deal with the current spike in the virus with the new variant.

Among the measures, Mask wearing at all times in public is mandatory at all times, as well as hands washing and social distancing.

Sporting events are allowed but only in empty stadium–without spectators and public offices are allowed to reduce their staff by 50%, with the rest working at home, while large gatherings are prohibited.

The government has threatened to impose fines against violators in line with the law.

“Additionally, the government may be compelled to impose a lockdown and or curfew if these guidelines are not fully complied with,” says the Health Ministry’s latest measures.

The release of the revised COVID-19 guidelines comes a day after President George Weah said he has bbeen made aware of an alarming increase in the number of persons in Liberia, who are contracting the new strain of the COVID-19 virus.
