The First Lady of Liberia, Madam Clar Weah has called on Merck Foundation to establish a State of the Act health facility that will provide healthcare for maternal and infant care, whose healthcare was mostly destroyed during the 14-years of civil unrest.
Merck Foundation is a U.S.-based, private charitable foundation that seeks to improve the health and wellbeing of people and their society.
Speaking at the 9th edition of Merck Foundation Africa Asia Luminary Network and its 5th anniversary celebration, Madam Weah urged Executives of the Foundation and other partners to visit Liberia, in order to get a “bird” view of what is transpiring in the country.
She used the Occasion to thank the organization for training over 35 doctors who were specialized in various areas with some receiving diplomas, degrees in various medical disciplines.
“If I may take you down memory lane, the last time we convened, I reported to you that over 35 Liberian doctors were undergoing specialty training which resulted in acquisition of diplomas, and master’s degree,” she said.
The areas included Diabetes, Cardiovascular, Sexual and Reproductive Medicines, Endocrinology, Respiratory and Acute Medicines, Oncology and Fertility Specialists and Embryology.
The first lady of Liberia said the country is making history again and adding that she happens to be the conduit through which the institution is using in order to fulfill Merck Foundation’s programs.
The event was used by Madam Weah to thank healthcare providers for risking their lives to ensure that citizens across the globe got quality healthcare response during the covid19 pandemic.
But the Liberian First Lady asserted: “We must be ever mindful of the importance of our healthcare system and double our efforts to advance and build the capacity.”
Addressing the high levels of First Ladies across the globe, Madam Clar Weah, healthcare system capacity needs to be built to ensure that all people have access to equitable and quality healthcare when needed.
