The Barshell University College in Monrovia’s Paynesville suburb is in crisis, with the Board of the institution hitting back at the President who launched a stinging attack on the school’s President, who claimed he resigned and was not sacked.

Dr. Matadi, who is acting as head of the interim management team, told the private OK FM radio in Monrovia on Wednesday that Dr. Israel C. Obiasogu was reresigned president of the Barshell University Collage (BUC), Dr. Israel C. Obiasogu was dismissed due to administrative reasons and professional lapses.

The Board described the actions of Dr. Obiasogu in going on a local radio displaying sensitive official documents of the University College and doing unethical things.

Earlier, the embattled President had revealed to the media that the CEO of the University, Montserrado County District #3 Representative CeeBee C.D Barshell is operating what he called ‘4.1.9’ University.

In an interview in Monrovia, Dr. Obiasogu said that he resigned based on the lawmaker failure to comply with regulation from the Commission on Higher Education and the Liberian Board on Nursing and Midwifery.

He said in the interview that he resigned based on the unwillingness to comply with conditions and requirements proscribed by the University Collage that has caused the activities of all BUC illegal.

Dr. Obiasogu said “this lawmaker on many occasions when I tell him to do the right thing that will ensure that the University Collage becomes a legal one, he says that I should not worry”.

According to him, the Montserrado County District #4 Lawmaker has promised to use his influence and affluence to operate the University.

One of the reasons he said led to his departure from the BUC was because the Lawmaker was monopolizing access to the University funds, thus strangulating the operation of the school. He also cited his constant usurpation of power and overlapping of function against the functions and duties of the office of the President of the University.

He went on to say that “I left that place because the lawmaker has the habit of making pronouncements about money which were big lies.”

Dr. Obiasogu said “giving the situation at the University, I waive my three months salaries from May, June and July to the BUC.”

Communication in the possession of this paper has it that the National Commission on Higher Education (NCHE), in March conducted series of assessments on the BUC and released the report to the University on October 11, 2018.

The NCHE recommended to the institution to do all that is required to operate a university. Some of the results from the assessments have told the university to exert more efforts to address cardinal issues raised during the evaluation as a way of paving the way to its goal.

The NCHE in their counts instructed BUC to set up an equipped library to enhance  research by students and lecturers. He said this will ensure that the collage is totally separated from the High school and obtain accreditation from the Liberia Board of Nursing and Midwifery to qualify its nursing program.

Among the counts are that recruit a vice president for academic affairs with the minimum qualification of an earned terminal degree, most preferably in education, and recruit a vice for administration with the minimum qualification of master degree in education, administration or related discipline.

Also, the Board of Nursing and Midwifery(BNM) in February 11, 2017  communicated to the BUC informing them that it is illegal and a violation of the laws of Liberia to set and operate a nursing institution without being accredited, adding that said violation is punishable under the law.

The communication from the BNM mandated the university to immediately stop the illegal operation of recruiting of students for the nursing program until the right things are done in keeping with their guidelines.

According to Dr. Obiasogu, all of the recommendations given by the NCHE and the BNM have been ignored by the Lawmaker.

Meanwhile, efforts made by this Reporter to reach Rep. CeeBee C.D Barshell via text massages, phone calls, and visits at his offices proved unsuccessful up till press time.
