MONROVIA, May 22, (LINA) – The National Public Health Institution of Liberia (NPHIL) has disclosed that it has recorded and diagnosed a total of 102 Mpox cases with 77 already treated while 25 are still undergoing treatment.

The statistics provided according to authorities of the institution cover the period of 2024 to present.

Speaking Thursday May 22, 2025, at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) regular briefing, the Director General of NPHIL Dr. Chris Dugbeh Nyan, said the disease when contracted is spread through body contacts with symptoms of cold, cough, skin rashes or pimples.

According to the NPHI Director, Mpox was first pronounced in Liberia in 2024 by the World Health Organization through the African Center for Disease Control when Liberia started reporting cases coming from Sinoe and Lofa Counties.

Director Nyan said since the outbreak in Liberia a total border surveillance has been launched with the training of experts in disease control and prevention and deployed in various counties to help address the situation in rural Liberia.

The NPHIL Boss also mentioned that Liberia has established active testing centers which also contribute to other neighboring countries like Sierra Leone and the Ivory Coast.

Recently, it was reported that Sierra Leone recorded a total of 1,904 Mpox cases with 14 deaths so far. The country is currently left with a huge number of active cases.

Dr. Nyan also explained that Ivory Coast and Guinea have also reported several active cases in recent weeks.
