Investigations are going on to establish the cause of the fire which burnt down the home of the Speaker of Liberia’s House of Representatives, Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa located in the Rehab Community in the Paynesville suburb of Monrovia several yards away from the residence of President Joseph Boakai.

Hours after the blaze last evening, there is so far no official statement one the cause of the first, the latest in a series of fire disasters affecting homes and other properties in recent weeks and Monrovia in and outside Monrovia.

But a local daily newspaper, Daily Observer today, Monday, April 15, 2024 quoted an eyewitness as saying that “the fire was first noticed from the roof of the Speaker’s exotic mansion”.

“When we saw the fire popping on top of the house, we told the security that the Speaker’s house was catching fire, but they overlooked it. After a few minutes, the fire started blazing on top of the house,” an eyewitness explained.

According to the report, an emergency call was placed to the Liberia Fire Service (LFS), which came with immediate effect to begin fighting the fire.

“However due to the fierceness of the fire, the LFS could not easily handle the situation, so an emergency call was also placed to the LPRC fire service who also came and helped to quench the fire,” the Daily Observer report added.

Despite the fierceness of the blaze, reports say there was no casualty or injury.

Speaker Koffa has been expected to address a news conference on Monday.

Recently, Montserrado County Senator Saa Joseph narrowly escaped death when similar raging fire gutted his home in Monrovia’s Sinkor suburb.
