A group of unemployed youths have been pleading with the newly confirmed Monrovia City Mayor Jefferson T. Koijee to give them jobs.
Speaking at his City Hall office in Monrovia during their visit on Tuesday, Mayor Koijee promised job creation for disadvantage youths from the streets of Monrovia, as they paid a surprise visit to him.
Koijee is also Chairman of the Youth League of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC).
The group of Young People speaking through their leader Ebenezer Grant said their visit was intended to plead to Mayor Koijee to create job opportunities for disadvantage youth to enable them address their daily needs.
Grant said they are tired begging in the streets for little or nothing, something he said usually exposes them to harm especially during the night hours.
“Creating job for disadvantage youth will help to support the government Pro- poor agenda and protect the Presidency of Ambassador George Weah in his quest to transform Liberia” he noted.
According to Grant, Liberia needs young People with a vision of change and total transformation, noting that they are of no exception to this change Liberians endeavor.
The group Leader said “Instead of us begging you for money continuously, it is about time we work to help ourselves.’’
For his part, Monrovia’s youngest City Mayor said he appreciated the young people for the visit and told them that President George Weah is aware about the active role young People played to make him President.
The 32-year-old Mayor of Liberia’s capital noted that the President will ensure that young people most especially the underprivileged are given opportunities to serve and also create programs to build their capacities with specific emphasis on Technical and Vocational Education.
As part of this plan, Mayor Koijee noted that President George Weah will on Wednesday launch a quick impact project called “ Youth Engagement for improve Community Sanitation and revitalization” which will focus on Young People .
He pointed out that the project will bring together One Thousand Six Hundred Young People from across Montserrado.
Mayor Koijee with immediate effect ordered the inclusion of the over One Hundred disadvantage Youth who paid him a surprise visit early Tuesday morning.
He also promised to transform their lives based on their behavior exhibited during the ten days “Youth Engagement for improve Community Sanitation and revitalization” program organized by President George Weah with support from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
Meanwhile, the Monrovia City Mayor has promised to work with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection in addressing the Social Welfare of disadvantage Youth in Monrovia and its surrounding areas.
Mayor Koijee said Disadvantage Youth popularly called Zogos are often seen vulnerable in the streets of Monrovia day and night loading cars and involving themselves in other dubious activities something he said needs urgent attention.
According to him, those disadvantaged youths need rehabilitation and reintegration to enable them contribute meaningfully to nation’s growth and development.
He noted that rehabilitating and reintegrating them would also reduce criminal activities and protect the free movement of Citizens.
Mayor Koijee also made the comment at the official turning over ceremony of Outgoing Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister Julia Duncan Cassell to Mrs. Piso Saydee Tarr.
