Members of the House of Representatives are expected to start deliberations on a Resolution seeking for the establishment of War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia this Friday (October 4, 2019).
The quest for said establishment has been lingering corridors in Liberia since the civil conflict ended years ago.
Victims and alleged War and Economic crimes perpetrators have been making calls wanting to see this establishment possible.
Some are requesting because they want to clear their names, while others are seeking justice for their relatives who got killed during the bloody civil unrest in Liberia.
As the debate rumbles on, some lawmakers have already signed a petition which is expected to be discussed on October 4, 2019.
On Thursday, the Joint committee of the House of Representatives of the Liberian Legislature resolution on the establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court visited the Du-Port Road Waterside Memorial Site.
The program at the Du – Port Road Waterside was extended by war victims community, Members of the Human Rights and Justice campaigners.
The Joint Committee in their resolution expressed its full support for the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation recommendations including the establishment of an Extraordinary Criminal Court in Liberia and commits to working with President George M. Weah for court’s establishment.
Part of what is contained in the resolution expected to be discussed on Friday is Section 48 of the TRC Act that provides that “The Head of State shall report to the National Legislature within three months of receipt of the the report of the TRC and on a quarterly basis thereafter as to the implementation of the commission’s recommendation”.
