The Chairman of the Independent National Commission on Human Rights (INCHR), Cllr. Dempster Brown has accused the Liberia National Police (LN) of covering up to shield Bryant McGill, Deputy Minister for Youth Development who allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl some two weeks ago.
Speaking during a press briefing today, Thursday, September 18, 2025 in Monrovia, the Human Rights Commission’s Chairman said the Deputy Minister should have been in police custody by now given the fact that rape is a bailable offense.
Cllr. Brown has therefore, given Police authorities a 72-hour ultimatum to arrest Deputy Minister McGill. . But there has so far been no reaction from the LNP.
Earlier on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, the LNP said it has written a communication to the US Embassy near Monrovia to assist them in conducting a DNA test on the alleged rape victim and the accused to establish his link to the alleged crime of rape.
The Police also said it has written the court for a search warrant to search the accused Bryant McGill to search his call log to ascertain whether there was any communication between the accused and survivor.
In a news conference in Monrovia, the police IG Gregory Coleman confirmed that the minor was allegedly tempered with the by Ministry of Youth and Sports, prompting public outcry and calls for speedy investigation.
Inspector General Gregory Coleman told journalists that while the child was violated, investigators have not yet confirmed whether Deputy Minister for Youth Development, Bryant McGill, was directly responsible.
He emphasized that medical and forensic evidence will be critical in determining the full scope of the crime.
“We are committed to a thorough, impartial investigation,” Coleman stated, urging the public to remain patient as the investigation unfolds.
The latest rape case linking the Deputy Youth Minister has triggered widespread condemnation, particularly from women activist groups and some officials of government due to the alleged involvement of deputy Minister McGill.
IG Coleman, alongside officials from the Ministry of Gender, confirmed that investigators have interviewed the victim, the accused, and family members to verify the claims. McGill has not been arrested but is reportedly cooperating with authorities.
No formal charges have been filed, but police have petitioned the court for a search warrant to examine the accused’s cell phones for forensic evidence.
Earlier, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection also called for swift and transparent action, reaffirming its zero-tolerance stance on gender-based violence A. Meanwhile, disturbing audio recordings released by the victim’s father have further galvanized public demand for justice.
Meanwhile, the Liberia National Police has pledged to keep the public as the investigation progresses. However, the survivor is currently in the custody of the Gender Ministry providing Socio-social counseling for her.
