A Poem On Liberia’s Current Drug Saga
In the land of the lone star, where the sea meets the shore,
A poison walks the streets, and knocks on every door.
Not a stranger from afar, but shadows in our hall
In the house of the people, in the seat of them all.
Yesterday’s ministers, and today’s men of power,
Their names are whispered low at the dark midnight hour.
Files move in silence, and truth wears a veil,
While mothers in West Point cry, and fathers in Paynesville wail.
Our sons are ghosts walking, with eyes that do not see.
Our daughters trade their future for a white misery.
The schools are emptying, the markets fill with pain,
And the grave-diggers work overtime in the rain.
Is this the Liberia we bled and prayed to build?
The one our martyrs dreamed of, with courage and with will?
From past government to present, the drug does not ask party
It devours everywhere.
O Leaders, past and present, hear the cry of the land!
The blood is on the table, will you wash your hands?
Justice is not vengeance. Law is not a song.
But if the law is sleeping, then where do we belong?
To my people, home and abroad, in Monrovia and beyond,
Let us not tear each other that is how the serpent wins.
Let us not curse our brother when the system is sick.
Let us stand as one body, and break this wicked trick.
For Liberia is not lost. The palm tree still can grow.
But we must cut the root that feeds the bitter woe.
Let the courts be strong. Let the truth be told.
Let the children live to see their nation made of gold.
So I pray: God of our fathers, arise and heal this land.
Give wisdom to the judges, give courage to the hand
That will point, that will charge, that will not look away
Until Liberia wakes up from this long, dark day.
One Liberia. One People. No drug can break us, if we choose love. 🇱🇷
