PRESIDENT BOAKAI OVERSEES SIGNING OF LANDMARK US$26 MILLION DEAL TO ESTABLISH LIBERIA’S FIRST ELECTRICAL MANUFACTURING PLANT
Nairobi, Kenya | May 13, 2026 — President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has overseen the signing of a landmark US$26 million Memorandum of Understanding between the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) and Kenyan-based Thames Electrical Limited for the establishment of Liberia’s first-ever electrical manufacturing and refurbishment plant.
The agreement, signed on the margins of the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, is expected to transform Liberia’s electricity sector through the local production and refurbishment of transformers, conductors, switchgears, smart meters, and other electrical materials.
According to the Executive Mansion-Liberia social media handles, President Boakai described the agreement as “the beginning of the end of Liberia’s dependence on imported electrical materials,” noting that the investment will significantly reduce procurement timelines, strengthen infrastructure delivery, create jobs, and position Liberia as an emerging regional hub for electrical equipment supply within West Africa.
The President further emphasized that the initiative aligns with his Administration’s broader vision of industrialization, infrastructure expansion, technology transfer, and private sector investment.
For his part, Mohammed M. Sherif, Managing Director of LEC, stated that Liberia has, for far too long, imported the very equipment used to build and maintain its national grid. He welcomed the investment and highlighted its significance in reducing procurement delays and accelerating electricity infrastructure development across Liberia.
The agreement marks a major milestone in Liberia’s drive toward industrial growth, energy sector transformation, and sustainable economic development.
