PLEEBO, Liberia-The Sodoken Central High School in Pleebo, Maryland County have launched a High school Health Club, the first of its kind in the area situated 587 kilometers southeast of Monrovia.
The aim of the new group is to educate their peers on good health practices, including creating awareness in order to curtail the further spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the County and other diseases and viruses, among other things.
The formal launching program, which held recently, brought together scores of school going children, including Students from Pleebo School System, Teachers, Health workers, local government as well as the media.
Speaking during the ceremony, Ezekiel D. CHolo, President of the Health Club said they are working with their respective colleagues to ensure good environmental practices are upheld.
Addressing the students during the ceremony was the guest speaker, David K. Bedell, who stressed the importance of promoting good hygiene practices as well as mental health related issues.
He encouraged the students to start from seeing a clean school campus as key in a move to prevent sicknesses and other health complications.
Representing the Maryland County Health Team during the program was the Mental Health focal person in the County, Moses Harmon, who promised to work with the High school Health Club positively to promote healthy activities in Maryland County and Liberia at large.
For his part, the Principal of the Sodoken Central High school in Pleebo City, Emmanuel T. Freeman praised the students for the initiative, welcoming the idea introduced on campus by the students.
Mr. Freeman described their initiative as a good venture and has the propensity of aiding the school’s janitor to keep the campus clean.
