As Liberia’s Anti-Graft Agency Steps Up Nationwide Public Awareness Activities

SANNIQUELLIE, Liberia–The Liberia Anti- Corruption Commission (LACC) Prevention Officer, John Tommy has underscored that the involvement of citizens in the fight against corruption is vital.

Mr. Tommy said corruption generates at the community levels which he said targeting it at the beginning worth educating the masses.

He maintained that corruption is a pandemic in the country that needs the collective efforts   of all citizens in eradicating it.

The LACC Corruption Prevention Officer asserted that corruption undermines local and national developments.

As such, he said educating the masses on the eradication of corruption is important.

Mr. Tommy made the remark when he gave the overview of the daylong Nationwide Anti- Corruption Awareness Campaign. Tommy stressed that the awareness is gearing to encourage and admonished the total involvement of citizens at the grassroots level in fighting corruption.

According to Tommy corruption is being described as the abuse of power, personalizing public interests, misapplication of entrusted funds, amongst other things.

Tommy disclosed that public awareness on the functions of the LACC is essential which the Nationwide Anti- Corruption Awareness Campaign is not an exception.

He highlighted that the LACC is constraints financially in terms of decentralizing it is Local offices across the country. But maintained that LACC National Administration is working on mechanism to ensuring all goes well.

The LACC Prevention Officer asserted that the Liberia Anti- Corruption Commission Nationwide Anti-Corruption Public Education Awareness Campaign is targeting five of the Country’s 15 Counties namely; Montserrado, Bomi, Grand Bassa, Grand Gedeh and Nimba Counties.

The Nationwide Anti-Corruption Awareness Campaign promotes ”An Act To Protect Witnesses To Be Known As Witness Protection Act of 2021”, An Act To Protect Whistleblower To Be Known As Whistleblower Act of 2021” and ” An Act To Amend And Restate An Act To Establish The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission And  To Re-Establish The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission”.

Theme ”strengthening   the rule of law public awareness on enabling anti-corruption legislations”.

The LACC awareness campaign was attended by several stakeholders including; the county security apparatus, educators, Representative of the Sanniquellie Marketing Association, Motorcyclist Union, students, youth grouping amongst others.

The Nationwide Anti-Corruption Commission is supported by United Nations Developments Programme with funding from the government of Luxembourg and the Republic of Korea.

The Nationwide Anti- Corruption Commission Awareness was held at the Jackie Guest House on Monday, May 21, 2024 in Sanniquellie, Nimba County.
