A local advocacy and human rights group, the He For She Crusaders Liberia has described as death trap, President Weah embarked project located at the edge of the runway of Airfield in Sinkor opposite the Fish market.
Recently, President Weah broke grounds for the construction of “Invincible Sports Park just meters away from the Spriggs Payne Airport runway in the Sinkor Airfield area in Monrovia. This will include play grounds, basketball court, a conference hall opposite the Fish Market on the Tubman Bourlevard.
President Weah told the ground breaking ceremony that he has been given go ahead by the Liberia Civil Aviation Authority regarding the safety of the facilities.
But speaking in an interview on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 in Monrovia, the Founder and National Coordinator of He For She Crusaders Liberia, Mr. Tamba Forkpah Jedidiah Johnson calls on members of both Houses to stop the President’s embarked project located at the edge of the run way of Airfield in Sinkor opposite the Fish market.
Mr. Johnson, a human rights advocate, wants the house of elders as the direct representatives of the Liberian people to stop ongoing construction and have the project relocated.
“As you may be aware, President Weah broke grounds for the erection of a sport walk an initiative that is welcoming but the venue and or location is a serious death trap that needs to be stopped and relocated, as a matter of urgency to rescue Liberians from the President’s death trap,” the rights advocate said.
According to him, his call is due to the current active use of the Airfield by domestic flights landing and picking up nothing that plan crash occurred around the world with Liberia experiencing two incidence; at that same Airfield years back and around the Robert International Airport as well.
“President’s initiative is welcoming, but the location is a death trap. “If the project is complete, the venue will be a center of attraction where people will gathered in such a large number, and the possibility to experienced plan crash/ accident is high,” Mr. Johnson noted.
The rights advocate is calling on the National legislatures and President Weah to redirect the initiative to other parts of Montserrado most likely to the Capital City of Montserrado.
“Redirecting the project will give opportunity to other people to build housing units and hired more citizens and improve commercial activities in the Capital Bentol,” the He for She crusader believes.
“Please stop the President’s death trap now and secure Liberians from future calamity” Johnson ended.
Construction work has already commenced at the site opposite the Fish market right under the run way of the Airfield.
Upon the ground broking ceremony, many Librarians including civil society organization and some opposition members criticize the project based on its location.
