Major Road In Grand Kru County Cut Off, Traders & Commuters Left Stran

BBARCLAYVILLE, Liberia– The main road linking Geeken in Grand Kru County to Karkakpo in Sinoe County has been cut off, following the collapse of the Chengbetee Bridge, leaving traders, transport operators and residents seriously stranded.

They are facing serious economic losses and mobility challenges.

The Chengbetee Bridge, which connects Buah to Upper Bolloh, is a vital transportation link for communities along the corridor.

Its collapse has rendered the road impassable to vehicles, disrupting the movement of goods and people between the two counties.

Local traders say the situation has significantly increased the cost of doing business.

Many are now forced to transport goods by motorbikes at higher prices, take longer alternative routes, or abandon perishable commodities altogether.

As a result, losses are mounting daily.

According to businessman Zayzay Togba, the impact on local commerce has been severe.

He expressed frustration that despite ongoing mining activities in Grand Kru District #2, where more than 40 excavators are reportedly operating, little attention has been given to maintaining roads and bridges in the area.

Togba further disclosed that authorities continue to collect approximately US$1,000 monthly from mining operations, yet affected communities see no visible improvements in infrastructure.

“This bridge is the lifeline of our business activities. Its collapse has left traders suffering and communities stranded. We need urgent action,” Togba said.

Residents also report difficulties accessing healthcare, schools, and emergency services, as service vehicles can no longer reach several villages.

Traders and community members are now appealing to the Grand Kru County administration, the Ministry of Public Works, and the central government to urgently repair the Chengbetee Bridge and restore the Geeken–Karkakpo road corridor.

As of press time, there has been no official response from government authorities regarding plans to address the situation.
