Medica Holds Sexual And Gender Based Violence Training For 20 Liberia Journalists

Monrovia, Liberia – A feminist organization identified as Medica Liberia conducted a two days intensive training for twenty Liberian Journalists on how to use the SASA method in creating awareness on sexual Gender Base Violence.

The training took place at Corina hotel on Wednesday April 12 to Thursday April 13,2023.

The SASA in the Kiswahili dialect means Now. SASA approach is an approach that mobilizes the community for social change.

Giving the overview of the training, Mrs. Elizabeth R. Greene, master trainer said that Medica Liberia has been existing for than twenty years and has been involved activism against domestic and Sexual Gender Base Violences and also providing social-Socio counseling.

Madam Greene said under the SASA approach awareness, they also have the stress trauma approach in fighting sexual gender base violence against women and girls.

According to her, the SASA approach was firstly tested in Grand Gedeh County and it seems to be working and they are currently testing the SASA approach in both Montserrado and Margibi counties.

Medica Liberia master trainer added that the SASA approach also focuses on the benefits based approach and how to balance powers instead of negative always.

The feminist organization is currently working with the Liberia National police, Gender Ministry, the One Stop Shop for SGBV cases and other institutions.

The institution is also looking at why violence against women continues to occur despite of the many awareness.

She further that the organization hope to archive how for journalists to report on SGBV cases without harming the survivors or victims and called on journalists to use the knowledge acquired wisely in helping the survivor.

SASA approach also has monitoring assessment namely Rapid assessment survey, community activity report and outcome tracking tool.
