The International Convention on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) has begun a two-day seminar in Monrovia aimed at assessing the implementation of all reporting procedure on the abuse of human rights to the international organizations.
According to the Executive Director of the Prison Fellowship of Liberia Francis Kolle, Liberia has been signatories to international protocol on human rights but government has not yet been able to implement these protocols domestically.
Kollie said that the Liberian Government has not being pro-active in addressing issues relating to human rights problem confronting the nation.
He noted that government has taken some steps to improve the country human rights records such as freedom of speech,
However, the rights advocate noted that more need to done in the areas of detention, women and children protection.
Kollie stressed that the judicial system needs to be favorable to every Liberian and not only the elite, in order to ensure that the people can access justice.
Meanwhile, the African Coordinator of the Center for Civil and Political Rights Andre Kangni Afanou has said the ratification of the international protocols is a step in the right direction to address human rights situation in Liberia.
Afanou stated that although Liberia is challenged with several issues, but over crowded prison condition is unacceptable base on international standard.
The government’s ratification of this international convention is said indicate that is prepared to respect human rights in Liberia and base on this Liberia will be given its human rights reports to the United Nations .
Afanou said the Liberia is expected to attend a Human Rights dialogue in Geneva this year to enhance the country human rights records on civil and political human rights with the Committee.
The seminar is taking place in Monrovia with look at gender equality, violence against women, voluntary termination of pregnancy, rights to life, liberty and security of prisoners, among other things.
