Most Liberians’ Immune System Compromised, Amid COVID-19 Threat

In the wake the deadly Coronavirus pandemic, one of Liberia’s prominent health educators has disclosed that the immune system of 60% of the country’s population is compromised, while they battle other diseases like malaria, diabetes, Tuberculosis (TB).

People with low immune system are said to face a greater .threat of succumbing to the killer virus.

Dr. Syrulwa Somah, former Occupational Health, Safety Technologist, (OHST), accredited by the American Board of Certified Safety Professional (BCSP) was speaking to this Freelance journalist via mobile phone on Monday, April 13, 2020.

“If your immune system falls below 500% that person , if he/she falls prey to the COVID-19, that person might likely die,” he said.

Explaining further, Dr Somah said people suffering from Diabetes, Tuberculosis, Malaria, when they come in contract this virus will find it difficult beating this virus.

In order to defeat this virus, he admonishes all Liberians to remain positive, encouraging them to be very selective by eating locally produced Liberin food.

The Liberian health expert said this country’s soil is fertile with food rich in protein , potassium, & vitamins C, “if your immune system must be built up to combat this virus, naming oranges, lime , grapefruits, others locally made include eddoes , yam , banana, pumpkin, Palm apple, etc that are rich in potassium.”

Liberia is one of the most malaria prune nations, with southeastern & central regions forming 60% of people suffering from malaria & diarrhea, he disclosed.

Professor Somah is President of the Harbel College in Margibi County, one of the counties where Covid-19 patient are quarantined at 14 Military Hospital.

He is also admonishing all Liberians to stay safe and follow all health regulations by washing their hands often, stay away from crowds, which he said are the best ways to end this pandemic.

Dr. Somah expressed concern that Liberia now has 59 confirmed cases of the killer virus, with 6 deaths and 4 recoveries.
