Muslim women in Liberia celebrate World Hijab Day

Muslim women in Liberia have been parading through the principal streets of the Liberian capital, Monrovia as part of celebrations marking World Hijab Day.

The Liberia Muslim Women Network in collaboration with other Muslim organizations joined the world on Thursday in celebrating the World Hijab Day from.

The women who took part in the celebrations came from across six counties, including Montserrado, Bassa, Bomi and Grand Cape Mount, Bong and Maryland counties.

The celebration of the event started from the January 28 and will end on February 2, 2018 with an indoor occasion.

Makoma F. Donzo, the head of the organizing team noted that the indoor program will with be held on February 2, 2018 at the Mall on Mamba Point in Monrovia from 2:00pm to 5:00pm.

She said this year global theme is ‘Strong in Hijab’ while the national theme is ‘Strong with Hijab’ demonstrating the strength of women wearing the veil.

Donzo also stressed that the indoor program will focus on discussion among women on how to take good care of themselves with their Hijab and their environment, stressing there will be drama demonstration on wearing Hijab, video break and show demonstrating the dress code of professional women wearing the veil, such as the police, army, nurse and among others.

“We are women and our Hijab is our pride and our way of life, we used this day to celebrate ourselves as women in Hijab and making others feel the life of us wearing the veil,” she maintained.

However, the hijab, apart from it been obligatory, it is visible way of them women in the hijab identifying with each other as women with in the Islamic religion and a symbol of personal space between women and their male counterparts.

According to Muslim scholars, the Hijab reserved the dignity of women in the religion, reduce insecurity from men and many others, the World Hijab Day is also used to showcase the freedom and traditional aspect of veil to those participating countries.

The day is an annual event celebrated February 1st of each year and is celebrated in 140 countries worldwide, this day was first celebrated in 2013 and was founded by Nazma Khan from New York.

The purpose of this day is to encourage women of all religions and other backgrounds to wear and experience the life of a Hijabees and also give non Hijabees and non-Muslim women the opportunity to experience Hijab wearing.

It is believed that some people misinterpret the Hijab in some countries as a method of oppression, believing that women are forced to wear the Hijab and live the tradition.

Those belies have led to the ill-treatment of women wearing veil in some countries in the world, which has taken away their voices and added to their suffering.

The World Hijab Day is also in recognition of millions of Muslim women across the world who choose to wear the Hijab and live a life of a modesty.

Meanwhile, Islam is a holistic way of life and the dress code is part of the religion, the way Muslims dress is what make them a Muslims.
