NEC declares PUP candidate Victor Watson Cape Mt. Senator elect but…

-He captures Unity Party stronghold

The vacant Senate seat that was in the hands of the former ruling Unity Party (UP) has been taken by the People’s Unification Party (PUP), which candidate, Mr. Victor Varney Watson has been declared winner in last Saturday’s Senatorial By election in Liberia’s western Grand Cape Mount County.

Pronouncing the winner on Tuesday at the National Elections Commission (NEC) headquarters in the Sinkor suburb of Monrovia, NEC’s Chairman, Cllr. Jerome Korkoyah said Mr. Watson won with a total votes of 6,920 from 171 polling places. 

Coming second is the Alternative National Congress (ANC) candidate, Mr. Simeon Boima Taylor with total votes obtained 4,932 with 19.76%, while Mr. Sando Wayne of the United People’s Party (UPP) followed third with 3,954 votes or 15.84%.

The just-ended Byelection in Cape Mount brought the former ruling unity Party candidate Mrs. Dabah Mabande Varpilah came fourth place with 3,291 votes, amounting to 13.19#

Mr. Matthew V. Z Darblo of Victory for Liberia’s transformation (VOLT)  obtained a total votes of 2, 148 amounting to 8.6%, Kula  Fofana of the Coalition of Liberia’s progress obtained 1,106 votes, 4.43% and Metzger, Daoda Vatorma an independent candidate obtained a total votes of 2,605 with 10.44%.

The total valid votes obtained were 24,956, with a total invalid of 803.

There was an overall total 25,759 votes from the 171 polling places across Grand Cape Mount County. 

However, NEC chairman disclosed that the Commission received two complaints from the ANC and UPP regarding the October 5, 2019 senatorial By-election.

The ANC candidate has now withdrawn his complaint with the UPP candidate complaint.

Meanwhile, the Acting Chairman of the People’s Unification Party, Moses Kwehai said he is greatful to God for their victory in the just ended senatorial by election.

He further added that this marks the beginning of their performance and more will be done for those who elected them. 

According to the citizens of Grand Cape Mount County, they did not make any mistake by voting for their candidate and they will feel the impact of their votes.
