Post-Violence Dialogue Continues In Maryland County, Liberia

HARPER, Liberia- The Liberian Senate Chair of Internal Affairs, Good Governance and Reconciliation J. Gbleh Bo Brown has arrived in the County along with Superintendent George Andrew Prowd to try to get to the root causes of the recent violent protests in both Harper and Pleebo cities in the southeastern region.

In the wave of violence, there were arson attacks, with the police station and home of Houses Speaker, Bohfal Chambers burnt as well as the storming and vandalizing of the Harper Central Prison, causing nearly one hundred prisoners to take their flight..

Hundreds of women  from both Cities last Wednesday converged at the Harper City Hall to present a petition to the Local authority and  the County Legislature caucus but nor of the officials were  available to receive the petition.

The women marched from Pleebo to Harper, which is about 25 kilometers dressed in dominant black to claim the Liberian government and international partners’ attention, calling for speedy and fair trial.

Several Town Hall meetings have been held with citizens and residents aimed at resolving the issue of violence and mass protest.

Senator Brown arrived in Maryland County alongside Superintendent Prowd on April 3, 2021 at to the William Coleman airport in Harper.

Speaking to citizens at a mass meeting held at the Administration Building in Harper Senator Brown tell Marylanders to let go what happened, move ahead with development and put the county on par with others.

The Maryland County Senator urged the citizens to cooperate with the joint security team in the county enforcing the President’s state of Emergency imposed on the County last week.

Senator Brown visit the bereaved family as he once again expressed his sympathy and condolences to the family.

During his visit to Pleebo City, Sen. Brown identified with the family of the motorcyclist who was gruesomely murdered recently in Maryland County and donated  4 bags of 25k rice, 10,000 Liberian dollars and drinks as his initial contribution to the family.

He assured family members that the perpetuators will be arrested and face be brought to Justice to face the full weight of the law.

In continuation of efforts to restored normalcy across Maryland County, Senator Brown also held  successful  town hall meetings with aggrieved motorcyclists, Traditional Leaders, Rural Women, and the Joint Security .

Regrets over motorcyclist’s grusome murder

Senator Brown has expressed regrets over the gruesome murder of the late “Mordocious Nyemah and several mysterious deaths of peaceful citizens across the County. Adding that he, including his colleagues at the Legislature are very unhappy about the situation and have condemned the act of alleged ritualistic killing in the County, says it spoils the County’s name and brings shame to them.

“I have come purposely because of the situation in our county, my colleagues and I held series of meetings including the Superintendent and the Ministry of Justice. The Government of Liberia is very concerned about this case and all other cases, I want to join the other leaders in the county to solve this problem. I understand your frustration and anger, but I want you to remain calm, thanks to God that we now have a suspect who has agreed of committing the act, I want to assure you that justice will prevail.”

The Maryland County lawmaker used the occasion to call on residents of Maryland County to be law abiding and report any unlawful act being committed across the County. Adding that Liberia is a Country of law, and the citizens must join the authority and keep the county safe.

Sen. Brown has been praised by citizens in both citizens for being the first lawmaker coming to Maryland to stabilize the situation.

For his part the Superintendent of Maryland County Hon: George A. Prowd happily extended thanks and appreciation to Senator Brown for his present in the County.

Superintendent Prowd told the citizens of Maryland County that the local authority will work with the County Lawmakers, including the National government to bring the perpetrators and those involve in the killing of the motorcyclist.
