PUL Names Committee To Work With Gov’t Probe Committee On Security Attacks

MONROVIA, Liberia- March 19 2020- The Press Union of Liberia welcomes the constitution of a committee by  President George Weah to investigate brutality against some members of the media by state security forces, a PUL press release said on, Thursday.

In just two weeks, the PUL recorded some seven violent attacks against Journalists while in the line of duty, according to record revealed recently.

The release, which comes less than 24 hours after the government announced the setting up of its committee, says the PUL interposes no objection to the credibility of those named on the presidential committee including its former president Peter Quaqua.

Mr. Quaqua is the current President of the West Africa Journalists Association (WAJA), who brings worth of experience in media advocacy

Members of the Press Union of Liberia recently staged a peaceful assembly decrying the unprecedented wave of brutality, detention and intimidation of journalists in Liberia.

The Union believes that the committee investigation will uncovered the disproportionate actions of these security officers and find a remedy to the problem.

The Union has a zero tolerance against all forms of brutality, detention and intimidation of Journalists in Liberia, says the PUL release signed by its Secretary General, Musa Kanneh.

Meanwhile, the PUL President in consultation with the leadership has named a six member committee to work with the presidential committee in investigating the matter.

Those named on the committee are Journalists Frank Sainworla, Jr., Cecelia Clarke, Cllr. Bobby Livingston, Alphonso Tweh, Rhodoxon Fayiah and Facia Harris. 

The committee is mandated to work with the presidential committee and report within ten days.
