The Chairman of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) Mulbah K. Morlu has accused some opposition politicians of plotting to assassinate President George Manneh Weah, because they are “angry” and have failed to accomplish their selfish aims.

Addressing a news conference in Monrovia on Wednesday, February 6, 2019, the CDC Chairman said:

“They have realized that you cannot win this man who has changed lives. Supporters of Alexander Cummings, Joseph Boakai and Charles Brumskine are on social media calling for the assignation of President Weah. They have resulted to propaganda and scare tactics and they are now talking about assassination,”

But the Vice Chairman of the opposition Liberty Pary (LP), Mr. Diarus Dillon has described as “reckless and grave” the claim by ruling CDC party Chairman Morlu. that some opposition politicians were plotting to assassinate President Weah.

Mr. Dillon told the local media on Thursday morning that this accusation must not be taken likely.

According to him, the assassination claim was part of a plot being concocted by the CDC government to falsely implicate some opposition figures, including himself, in alleged assassination attempt against President Weah.

The Liberty Party’s Vice Chairman described the current political environment as a return to the dark days of the Samuel Doe era, comparing Morlu’s claim to the infamous alleged Flanzanmilton assassination attempt in the 1980s.

Mr. Dillon revealed that he has got inside information from some of his contacts in the state security of a plan to take away his life.

Meanwhile, the opposition leader has said a formal letter will later be sent to Liberia’s Justice Minister to inform him about the allegation made by the CDC Chairman.

The Liberty Party Vice Chairman he will be requesting the Justice Ministry to invite Mr. Morlu for questioning to provide proff of his allegation that some opposition politicians were plotting to assassinate President Weah.

At the same time, the CDC says the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf administration is largely to blame for the economic quagmire Liberia finds itself in at the moment.

Chairman Morlu said President Weah is simply healing the damage inflicted on the economy and that this government cannot be held liable for the country’s current economic wretchedness.

Addressing a news conference under the Sycamore Tree at the party’s headquarters, he recounted key gains made by the George Manneh Weah government especially in health, education and in combating graft in less than a year.

“People suspected of betraying public trust were suspended, charged, sent to court and are now standing trial”, Morlu boasted, as he spoke of Liberia’s improvement in the latest corruption index released by Transparency International.

He lashed at some ex officials of the Johnson Sirleaf government including former Labor and Public Works Minister Samuel Kofi Woods, who he said are on a smear campaign with the aim of gaining political advantages.

President Weah and team, the CDC Chairman noted, have succeeded to a large extent in setting the country on the right development trajectory, saying “if this government were not a success, there would not have been rush on radio programs”.

The wish of President Weah, he added, is to work with all Liberians because it is in their best interest that he’s doing all that he keeps doing.

“The roads and other projects this government is undertaking is for all Liberians and not only CDC partisans”, Morlu noted.

Wednesday’s press statement by the CDC Chair is no doubt going to generate reactions from some officials of the erstwhile government some of whom remain staunch critics of the current administration.
