Red Cross helping to preserve, promote Liberia’s cultural heritage

(Last Updated On: )

The production of traditional woven attire forms part of the cultural heritage of Lofa County. But research has disclosed that due to increased globalization including the influx of foreign materials on the Liberian market, this industry which forms part of the pride of Lofa County remains under serious threat.

As part of effort to revamp the sector, the Lofa County Chapter of the Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRCS) with support from the Danish Red Cross over the weekend donated two sets of brand new electric designed sewing machines and a generator to the Kolahun Female cotton producers.

The gesture according to the (LNRCS) Lofa coordinator Joseph Varney is to help preserve the Liberian heritage.

He said the Liberian Red Cross is working with the group of rural women based in Kolahun, Lofa County to improve and increase their cotton production, and transform the raw cotton into finishing products.

According to him, funding generated from sell of the country cloths produced by the women will be used for their empowerment as women.

He cautioned them to use the equipment wisely so as to better improve their lives and provide support to their children in terms of education.

Do you remember those traditional values and practices? It is amazing to think about our heritage and do those things that truly portray our African culture particularly in northern Liberia (LOFA).

Hawa Tulay on behave of the women thanked the Liberia National Red Cross for the equipment provided them at this critical stage.

According to Madam Tulay the provision of the two designed electric sewing machines is timely as they continued to strive for supporting their children education and the families. Report by Tokpa Tarnue in Voinjama, Liberia
