PRESS RELEASE
27 November 2025
Todee District – The Liberia Women Empowerment Project is hosting a high national-level visit in Nyehn Town, Todee District, Rural Montserrado County.
The visit is led by Honorable Gbeme Horrace Kollie, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MGCSP), and joined by Georgia Wallen, the World Bank Manager in Liberia, together with all LWEP service providers led by Plan International, the Lead Service Provider and project communities.
The LWEP is funded by the World Bank to strengthen women’s economic empowerment, promote positive social norms, improve GBV prevention and response, and enhance community-level accountability. This mission will bring together the Honorable Minister of Gender and the World Bank Country Manager, who will engage directly with rural beneficiaries, women-led enterprises, Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), SASA! activists, local leaders, and service providers participating in LWEP activities.
The visit aims to strengthen visibility, oversight, and support for LWEP-supported interventions across Montserrado County. During the field mission, the delegation will receive updates from women-led groups and VSLAs, hear testimonies on the impact of LWEP grants and capacity-building trainings, and observe demonstrations on the community-based Grievance Redress Mechanism (GRM) and GBV referral pathways. The team will also engage SASA! activists leading structured discussions on gender norms and power dynamics, and interact with health workers and police officers contributing to local GBV prevention and response efforts. Additionally, the mission will feature site visits to selected VSLA business locations, allowing the delegation to witness firsthand how rural women are expanding livelihoods and strengthening community resilience through LWEP support.
A key highlight of the visit will be the recognition of eight women-led VSLAs in Rural Montserrado that recently received a total of USD 32,000 in first-tranche grant payments, supporting 230 members (199 women and 31 men). These groups; Laila Village Savings, Willekemah, Fairness VSLA, Kukatune, Quapaigeh VSLA, Try and See Savings, Leesaye Savings, and Peace Mother Club, are using these grants to scale income-generating activities, reinforce savings culture, and boost economic independence among rural women.
This field mission highlights the Government of Liberia’s continued commitment, alongside the World Bank and implementing partners, to advancing women’s empowerment and fostering safer, more inclusive communities. MGCSP encourages residents of Todee District to welcome the delegation and demonstrate the ongoing progress made through LWEP.
The Ministry also reminds the public to report any incidents of violence against women and girls through the GBV Hotline (116) and the LWEP Feedback & Grievance Line (4433), both of which remain free and confidential
