Meteorologists are already warning about the very real possibility that the El Niño phenomenon will return to the Pacific next summer, although this time it could reach an unprecedented level, becoming a Super El Niño, with potentially devastating consequences worldwide.

Experts warn that, should it ultimately occur, it would alter the global climate map, leading to a significant increase in global temperatures by 2027 and a range of additional problems.

There is therefore a risk that extreme weather events such as very heavy rainfall, severe flooding, more extreme droughts, or a greater number of forest fires will intensify in different parts of the world.

If that weren’t enough, a more intense El Niño event would also actively contribute to a surge in global warming by causing a sudden and even permanent increase in temperatures.

“Due to the increasing concentration of greenhouse gases, the climate system cannot effectively dissipate the heat released during a major El Niño event before the next one arrives and raises the baseline level again,” U.S. Department of Defense meteorologist Eric Webb warned The Washington Post.

To understand this phenomenon that some experts are predicting, the first step is to understand what El Niño and La Niña are. These are recurring climate cycles in which the usual pattern of movement between ocean water and atmospheric air in the central and eastern tropical Pacific is disrupted, typically occurring at intervals of between two and seven years.

Under normal conditions, the warmer surface waters of the eastern Pacific are drawn westward by the trade winds (stable and constant air currents), causing the cooler water from the depths of the ocean to rise to fill that space and regulate temperatures.

However, there are times when this process changes abruptly, when the trade winds weaken. This causes the water in the eastern Pacific to warm up, generating large updrafts of warm air that alter the usual pattern of air circulation. This phenomenon is known as El Niño and can affect the climate of the entire world.

When the El Niño phenomenon occurs, temperatures increase by a minimum of 0.5 degrees Celsius above normal, which can lead to major winter storms in the western United States, floods and droughts in different parts of Africa, and more intense heat waves around the world.

Sometimes, the temperature increase exceeds all expectations, and when it exceeds 2 degrees Celsius, it is considered a Super El Niño. This is a way of defining the extreme intensity of this phenomenon.

Since the 1950s, only three Super El Niño events have been recorded: between 1982 and 1983, between 1997 and 1998, and the most recent one between 2015 and 2016, when critical phenomena such as a violent hurricane season in the central North Pacific, water shortages in Puerto Rico, and a severe drought in Ethiopia occurred.

As for El Niño, the last one took place between 2023 and 2024, being one of the five most intense recorded since data has been available and the cause of the record temperatures experienced globally during 2024, as highlighted in The Guardian by the Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization, Celeste Saulo.

So what will happen now? Expert forecasts indicate a high probability of a Super El Niño event this year, starting in late summer or early autumn, and, as Climate Central’s media director, Tom Di Liberto, warned in The Guardian, “the risk is high enough to be concerned.”
