The Office of the Vice President of Liberia Jeremiah Kpan Koung, Sr. has officially launched the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Business Network in Liberia, reaffirming government’s commitment to tackling malnutrition and promoting sustainable nutrition initiatives across the country.
The SUN Business Network in Liberia under the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement Secretariat.
The Scaling Up Nutrition initiative is a country-driven movement that seeks to end all forms of malnutrition by 2030.
The SUN Business Network, as part of this effort, aims to engage, inspire, and invest in sustainable solutions to tackle hunger and undernutrition.
The launch of the SUN Business Network is intended to empower the private sector to provide affordable, safe, and nutritious food through innovation, strong partnerships, and accountability mechanisms.
The initiative is being sponsored by the United Nations Nutrition with funding from Government of Ireland through Irish Aid.
Speaking on behalf of Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung, Sr., Deputy Chief of Staff for Administration, Dr. MacDonald Metzger, lauded the SUN Network for its “invaluable work” in improving nutrition governance, enhancing multi-sectoral coordination, and ensuring access to better nutrition, especially for women and children.
“As Vice President and Champion for Nutrition in Liberia, Hon. Koung recognizes the vital role nutrition plays in shaping the health, education, and productivity of our people,” Dr. Metzger said. “He reaffirms his enduring support to the SUN Movement, both globally and in Liberia.”
Dr. Metzger stressed that achieving meaningful nutrition outcomes requires collaboration across government, civil society, the private sector, and international partners.
He highlighted the “Delivering as One” approach as a call to harmonize interventions, reduce duplication, and build synergies to maximize impact.
“Every investment in nutrition must yield maximum results for children, women, and communities,” he noted.
Special recognition was given to the Government of Ireland through Irish Aid for its unwavering commitment and generous support to global and national nutrition programs.
Ireland’s leadership, Dr. Metzger said, has been instrumental in driving progress against malnutrition and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals.
On behalf of Vice President Koung, Dr. Metzger declared the SUN Business Network officially launched, urging that its success be measured not by meetings, but by tangible achievements.
He highlighted nutrition as a critical driver of health, education, and productivity, stressing the importance of the “Delivering as One” approach to foster coherence, reduce duplication, and maximize impact across government, civil society, the private sector, and international partners.
“Together, and by truly delivering as one, we can ensure that no child is left behind and that nutrition becomes the foundation of a healthier, more prosperous, and resilient Liberia,” he concluded.
In remarks, National Coordinator of SUN secretariat in Liberia Augustine Musa said the initiative is to provide coordination mechanism with stakeholders to talk about nutrition.
According to Musa, SUN business Network is the back bone of scaling up nutrition in any society.
The launch event brought together national stakeholders, UN agencies, and development partners under the theme “Strengthening UN Country Coordination Mechanisms Towards Delivering as One held at the Golden Key Hotel in Paynesville City.
