As mask wearing, social distancing and other COVID-19 preventive measures continue to be largely ignored in Liberia, so is an increase in the number of new confirmed cases of the pandemic.
The most recent Update released by the National Public Health Institute (NPHIL) shows that there has been a total of 13 new COVID-19 infections with in the period of 24 hours, from December 2-3, 2020.
“#LiBCOVID19 Case Update: 13 new confirmed cases, No new death, and No new recovery reported as of 10:00 PM, December 3, 2020. #SaveLives #StopTheSpread,” according to the December 3, 2020 report.
This now brings the total number of new confirmed active cases in Liberia to 235, and the total number of confirmed cases to 1,676. But the total number of deaths remains at 83.
Health authorities in the country have in the last few weeks warned that there is a second wave of COVID-19 cases and advised people to take the necessary preventions.
There is a government regulation making it mandatory for people to wear face/nose ,masks in all public places and respect physical/social distancing, but it is yet to be enforced.
Some observers say that the huge gatherings at various political rallies around the country in the run up to the December 8 elections might be serving as a fertile ground for spreading of the virus.
“No mask, no ride, no mask no service” stickers distributed by NPHIL remain just another sign on vehicles, at local banks, markets and other public areas, as the mood of most people across the country is as though the Coronavirus was a thing of the past.
