By Amara Konneh

Monrovia– Ahead of the much-anticipated presidential and legislative elections, supporters of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) have taken to the streets of the Liberian capital to say a “special thanks and appreciation to the Weah led Government for protecting the peace while undertaking several developmental initiatives in the length and birth of Liberia.”

The CDC is a conglomeration of three political parties in Liberia including the Congress of Democratic Change, the National Patriotic Party, the People United Party, the People’s Democratic Party, with several other parties recently throwing their weight behind the ruling CDC.

It can be recalled that the alliance formed against the former Unity Party was held in January 2017 General Elections, bringing together several political institutions to contest the elections despite the former Speaker Alex Tyler and convicted warlord Prince Y. Johnson, but other political institutions remain an embodied elements of the ruling Coalition.

Today, tons of thousands of Liberians are under the emblem of the Coalition of Democratic Change, CDC and other well-meaning Liberians, some who are not members of a political group have expressed to journalists that they are heading to the headquarters of the Congress of Democratic Change to say in a loud tone ” thank you” to the Liberian Leader for his enormous developments in the country, commenting on road connectivity, promoting good health care, education security and peace.

The commuters were mostly male dominant with a single female having a banner with the inscription ” We are not Cidicians, but we have come to say thank you to President Weah” for initiating several developments in six years of power and speaking on behalf of the ” Not Cidicians”, Mohammed Jalloh disclosed that the first term of President Weah is characterized by several developmental initiatives. This, he says, suggests a sign of second to allow him complete other unfinished projects and as Liberians do not subscribe to the party ideologies, but they have to say thank you for maintaining the peace and initiating several developments in Liberia.

Supporters, who mostly were wearing CDC paraphernalia and carrying placards with the with a picture of President Weah and his running mate, Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor in Monrovia and its environs. Reports say similar show of support also took place in nearby Bomi and Margibi Counties. In Monrovia, the Weah thank you display was climaxed with a big ceremony at the headquarters of CDC, with chanting of battle cries and slogans such as, “Our born pa na show face and our step pa worry” and in their interpretation, President Weah is Considered a ” born Pa while former VP Boakai is the stepfather.”.

The Weah Administration has spent six years in power in its first term implementing several developmental initiatives, roads, a healthcare economy and good governance.

The principal streets of Monrovia and its environs were scenes of Liberians believed to be CDC supporters though others went to grace the occasion, not Cidicians, who were all in a jubilant mood, some wearing white t-shirts with black jeans trousers while others believed to be other pro-CDC parties’ supporters were seen wearing the symbols of CDC and other emblems of the affiliated political parties as they all gathered in their numbers to say thank you for exemplifying a good leadership.

Political Rallies in Liberia are meant to showcase political strengths where politicians use the occasion to outline their achievements and progress ahead of their major counterparts, but they all share a common bond by maintaining peace despite their political differences. But with all of the achievements since the Weah Administration came to power, there are also been a series of allegations of corruption, bad governance and poor economic surrounding the government where citizens took to the streets on June 7, 2019, accusing the government of President Weah of missing 16 billion Liberian Dollars.

With all of the allegations surrounding the Weah Administration notably among them, the death of Charloe Musu, the case with the US$100 million cocaine case in which all four accused were found not guilty; as well as other statements made by other opposition politicians, Liberians believed to be supporters of the ruling CDC have resolved and assured President Weah a second term bid considering the enormous petitions issued by Liberians in the country.

Today, Monday, July 17, 2023, supporters of the coalition of the ruling party are in their mass at every corner of Montserrado County and its environs to say thank you to the Liberian Leader for the transformation and assure him of the second term bid despite allegations surrounding his government on corruption.

However, speaking in an exclusive interview with a young activist whose name is withheld based on anonymity, has said that the Weah Administration has done nothing to be given a second term and as such Liberians should not trust them with their power to avoid disastrous economic and poor governance.

He said that many of the developmental initiatives of the CDC Government had underscored, they first were initiated by the then-UP Government headed by Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and former Vice President Joseph Nyumah Boakai, therefore the government under George Manneh Weah has nothing to show to the Liberian People.

Considering all of the rigmarole in the oppositions champs and the progress and challenges faced by the Weah Administration, October 10, 2023, will be a scene of critical decision-making where Liberians will go to the polls for the first time they will be responsible to head their electoral process through a transparent means to give the mantle of authority to a candidate for six-year and that decision lies squarely in the hands of the (eligible voters) Liberian populace 2023.
