As LNBA Annual Convention Kicks Off This Week

Monrovia, Liberia- After President Joseph Boakai recently appointed him Chairman of the government-owned Law Reform Commission, the position of Cllr. Bornor Varmah, the current President of the Liberia (LNBA) is being asked to quit his post in Bar’s leadership.
In response to a question posed to him as to whether he will not be conflicted serving as the Bar president and at the same time serving as head of the Law Reform Commission, Cllr. Bornor M. Varmah responded that it’s the annual convention of the LNBA that will determine whether or not he will serve as Bar till his three-year tenure expires.
There has been murmuring in the corridor of the legal community that Cllr. Varmah can’t be the Bar president and serve in government as Executive Director of the Law Reform Commission recently confirmed by the Liberian Senate.
While some are demanding his removal, others are mobilizing for him stay due to his numerous developments he has carried out since he took over Bar President in January this year.
“At this moment, I can’t much about whether or not I will resign as Bar President but only the convention can determine that,” Cllr. Varmah added.

LNBA Announces 2025 Convention In Nimba County, CLE To Feature LRA/New Value Added Tax (VAT) Law
In a news conference at its headquarters in Monrovia on December 1, 2025 – The Liberian National Bar Association (LNBA) President Cllr. Varmah officially announced the convening of its 2025 Annual Convention in Ganta City, Nimba County.
According to him, The convention is scheduled to take place from December 4 to 7, 2025, at the Wuo Garbe Tarppia Intellectual Hall, Peace Empire Hotel.
He stated that, the official opening is slated for Friday, December 5, 2025, at 10:30 a.m., centered on the theme: “STRENGTHENING THE RULE OF LAW: THE LAWYER’S ROLE IN RESTORING PUBLIC TRUST.”
Bar President Varmah said, the proceedings will be led by LNBA National President, Cllr. Bornor M. Varmah and aim to unite legal professionals in addressing critical issues of justice delivery and public confidence.
The LNBA will also use this Convention to honor high performing judges in a bid to recognize the number of cases these judges have disposed of during the year 2025 which has enhanced public confidence in the judiciary.
Cllr. Varmah added that, this year’s convention is honored to feature Cllr. Mark M. Marvay, Managing Partner at Beyond Law Chambers, who is also a former Member of the National Executive Council of the LNBA, as the keynote speaker.
In addition to the formal sessions, the Convention will include social and fraternity events to foster unity among members.A paramount feature of the Convention is the mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE) program, designed to ensure the requisite professional competency of the Liberian bar.
He expressed that, Counsellors and Attorneys-At-Law are strongly encouraged to attend these sessions, as they will afford the opportunity to acquire the mandatory ten (10) CLE credit hours required for the 2025 professional year.
This year’s CLE sessions will feature two important and timely topics critical to the nation’s economic and legal landscape:1. Introduction to the Value-Added Tax Law of 2024 that will replace the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP) Regulation No. 136 and the Rules.”
- “Procedures for Implementation of the Value of the Added Tax Law of 2024; the Act to Amend Chapter 10 of the Revenue Code, 2000, to provide for Value Added Tax (VAT) replacing Goods and Services Tax (GST).”
These crucial presentations will be led by the legal team at the Liberia Revenue Authority(LRA).
- A review of the Rules of Court based recommendations from the Committee established by the Honorable Supreme Court.
These activities will also include a parade and sport events scheduled for Saturday, December 6.
As you may be aware the National Convention of the LNBA is the highest organ of the Bar which takes place annually to generate conversations and discussion that positively impact the country’s rule of law sector, so it is expected that members of the Bar will participate under a more professional atmosphere.
Meanwhile, the LNBA announces the completion of the ground floor its National Headquarters project along the Robert International Airport highway. A full report of the status of this project will be made at the Convention.
The leadership thanks all its members and supporters who have contributed to the success of the project so far.
Additional Achievement
The Bar President has achieved several goals within the LMBA such the exchange program between the Liberian National Bar Association and the American Bar.
Another achievement is said to be the establishment of a Banking institution within the LNBA headquarters where members of Bar will no longer pay their Bar dues to the Secretariat but the bank to increase transparency.
