After Succumbing To Death, Prof. Alhaji G. V. Kromah Being Laid To Rest Wednesday

Professor Alhaji Kromah, a former member of the transitional Council of State, who died on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 is being laid to rest today, Thursday in Liberia’s western Bomi County.

President George Manneh Weah has paid tribute to the fallen politician and a mass state ceremony was earlier held at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium in central Monrovia.

MONROVIA (LINA) – Liberian politician, Alhaji G.V. Kromah and former leader of ULIMO-K, a splinter group of the defunct rebel movement – United Liberation Movement of Liberia for Democracy (ULIMO) has died.

Mr. Kromah, 68, was a professional journalist who also served as a Professor of Mass Communication at the University of Liberia.

The sad event occurred in the morning hours of Tuesday at his residence in Monrovia, after a period of illness, a family source said.

G.V. Kromah, as he was affectionately referred to by compatriots in and out of Liberia, served in many public positions ranging from Assistant Information Minister, Director General of the Liberia Broadcasting System to Minister of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism among others.

In line with the religious belief of the late G.V. Kromah (A Muslim), the funeral rites is expected to be held on Wednesday, January 19.

Professor Kromah life took a different dimension during the Liberia civil conflict when he co-founded ULIMO, a resistance armed group that forced former President Charles G. Taylor to the negotiating table aimed at finding an amicable solution to the armed conflict in Liberia.

Later on, the group ULIMO split into two factions in 1994, with Kromah leading one faction known as ULIMO-K with its power base in northwestern Liberia.

After the war, Kromah contested the July 19, 1997 Presidential Election where he represented the All Liberian Coalition Party, (ALCOP) and finished third behind the National Patriotic Party (NPP) and Unity Party (UP) having obtained 4.02 percent of the total votes.

Kromah ran again as the party’s presidential candidate in the October 11, 2005 elections in which he was again defeated, receiving 2.8 percent of the votes.

G.V. Kromah, who taught at the University of Liberia for years, was memorialized by several of his students who took to social media upon news of his demise to express their sadness and condolences.
