Amid Division Among Workers, Liberia Labour Congress Calls For Unity

The Liberia Labor Congress in Liberia is calling for unity among the members of the Domestic Workers Union of Liberia in order to address the challenges affecting them.

LLC’s Secretary General, John Nyemah Nat, said only unity will strengthen their efforts aimed at combating the abuses they are experiencing in the hands of some of the employers.

Mr. Nat made the appeal when he delivered the keynote speech at the opening of a two-day training organized by the Domestic Worker Union of Liberiam with funding from the Domestic Workers Federation International in Monrovia’s Paynesville suburb over the weekend.

The LLC Secretary General cautioned domestic workers to abreast with the protocol and provisions outlined in the   International Labor Organization convention number 189.

According to him, the LLC continues to receive complaints of bad labor abuses among domestic workers and efforts are underway to address them,

In remarks, the President of the Domestic Workers Union of Liberia, Martha Cole, stressed the need for the National Legislature to domesticate the International Labor Organization convention number 189.

According to her, the law cannot be enforcing it  as long as the national legislature fails to domesticate the law despite Liberia signing the international document.

Mrs. Cole cautioned the participants never to look down or de-value themselves but must respectful of their bosses.

The President of the Domestic Workers Union of Liberia also advised the domestic workers never to expose themselves sexual adavnces

The Domestic Worker Convention, which was adopted 2011, during the International Labor Organization conference mandates all member-states to domesticate the Convention 189 to ratify in order for employers to respects the rights of domestic workers.
