Police in Liberia’s southern Grand Bassa County say a fatal motor accident has claimed the lives of three persons along the Buchanan –Monrovia highway, leaving 19 others injured, four of them in critical condition.
Buchanan, which has seen multiple tragic motor accidents in recent times, is Liberia’s second city which is situated some 88 miles from the capital, Monrovia.
According to the Police Commander Siakor Freeman, the acccident occurred on Sunday evening when 25 passengers were riding on a gray commercial bus with plate number G10009 to Monrovia.
Commander Freeman said the cause of the accident was due to mechanical fault when the shaft of the vehicle broke off and the bus summersaulted three times.
He told the local Magic FM community radio in Buchanan that the bus driver, Daniel Gossaye, age 51 who lives in Paynesvillie in Monrovia, overloaded the 18 seated bus with 25 persons.
The Police Commander said they were brought to the Arcelor Mittal hospital where Doctor Alfred Lowa stated that the three people died before arrival.
Doctor Lowa told reporters that of the three dead people, one a female while two of them are male.
Of the 19 injured, four of the victims who were under critical condition were taken to Monrovia by their family members, Doctor Lowa added.
He said the rest of the victims are at the Arcelor Mittal hospital undergoing treatment.
