Monrovia– The Chairman of the Joint Security of Liberia, Justice Minister Oswald Tweh has disclosed that the Liberian government is beefing up the joint security presence on the border with Guinean, assuring that the government is in full charge of the situation.
Addressing a special Information Ministry press briefing on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, Cllr. Tweh said the government will continue to address it with the highest degree of maturity and wisdom necessary to protect Liberia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He added the government has determined that a lasting and peaceful solution will be possible through intensive dialogue and multiple diplomatic engagements.
“We, your Government, will represent you well. We will do everything to ensure that our peace is not threatened”, the Liberian Justice Minister asserted.
Revealing some of the actions taken by the government as it relates to amicably resolving the issue, he stated that since March of this year, the Government has dispatched various delegations to the borders and on March 13, 2026, dispatched a high level delegation to Conakry to meet with officials of the Government of Guinea to discuss the matter and prevent future incidents.
The Government of Liberia has frowned on disturbing statements that have the propensity to escalate the Liberia–Guinea border altercation, which the Liberian government has applied continual diplomatic efforts to resolve with Guinea for the restoration of peace and stability initially enjoyed by both countries’ citizens before the recent border disagreements.
While addressing the press on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at the Ministry of Information press conference, Liberia’s Justice Minister and Chairman of the country’s security council, Oswald Tweh, raised alarm over unnecessary comments being spewed by citizens as the government pushes the de-escalation of the matter through diplomatic means.
The Minister says Liberians should be patriotic enough as they express their views and stance on the matter, noting that at this crucial moment, the country needs the collective support for the amicable solution of the situation, but not statements that will heighten and expand the border current situation, warning citizens from any unnecessary statements that will further escalate the matter.
“The Government warns all citizens and residents alike that statements and analysis intended to inflame and undermine our efforts will not be tolerated”. Tweh said. “The issue of conflict and threat of escalation is sensitive and must be treated with utmost patriotism”.
Min. Tweh disclosed that there have arisen numerous comments, commentaries, statements, utterances, claims, allegations, etc. on social media and the print media, about the situation at the Liberia-Guinea border, which have dangerous propensity of inciting fear, panic and chaos within the communities.
He averred: “This could cause unnecessary provocations and the very positive approach of the Government could be jeopardized”.
The Justice Minister then calls upon all to desist from making statements that will create instability and escalate the situation, disclosing that the national security institutions and agencies are in full control of this situation and all non-state actors should desist from acting outside the constitutionally defined framework.
While the Government reaffirms its commitment to the rule of law, according to him, the freedom of speech and the press and the upholding of our democratic principles, the government will not hesitate to take appropriate lawful actions against individuals conducting themselves in a manner ‘inimical to the Country and its people’.
He described voluminous videos and images circulating on social media as “fake AI generated images”, calling for a careful verification of these images and videos before making any conclusion about the border shared with Guinea.
Tweh admonishes the Liberian citizenry to be aware of such images and should not panic or be in fear whenever they come across them. He assured that government will exert meaningful efforts in having the matter laid to logical conclusion.
“In these times of the collective survival of our nation, the patriotism and nationalism of our citizens are tested. In nationalism, the peace and stability of our country comes first and our patriotism cannot be compromised”, Cllr. Tweh noted.
According to him, these advanced engagements culminated into the visit of President Boakai and the President of Sierra Leone, H.E. Julius Maada Bio, to Conakry, Guinea, to meet and discuss with the President of Guinea, H.E. Mamadi Doumbouya.
He unveiled that the three leaders held cordial, frank, and fraternal discussions that culminated in the signing of a communique that acknowledges the historical ties, common tribes, tradition and culture as well as the spirit of the friendship, solidarity, good neighbourliness, and cooperation that unite the three countries and the leaders affirmed their commitment to its implementation.
Meanwhile, the Justice Minister has said the Government of Liberia has taken additional actions to deploy and reinforce the Joint Security at our borders to maintain calm and assure a robust presence in the area.
He says the goal is not escalation, but the restoration of confidence and the protection of the Liberian citizens residing around the border where the situation is currently taking place.
Tweh also calls upon all its citizens, especially those living along the border, to exercise restraint, mutual respect, and to preserve the historical bonds of peaceful coexistence. He added that Liberia is a nation of peace, and that the government will continue to engage its Guinean brothers and sisters through the spirit of the Mano River Union which is expected to convene very soon.
