Nearly 1,700 workers and associates of ArcelorMittal Liberia have been voluntarily vaccinated through a collaborative effort between the AML and the Ministry of Health of Liberia, the giant iron ore mining company said on Wednesday.

In a press release on May 19, 2021, the AML said: “As a company that prioritizes health and safety, ArcelorMittal Liberia is leading the way in supporting government’s efforts to encourage Liberians and others residing in the country to take advantage of the opportunity to get vaccinated against the Coronavirus (COVID-19).”

This represents the largest number of people to be vaccinated against the COVID-19 pandemic at a single company so far, since the vaccines against the pandemic arrived in Liberia under the global Covax arrangement.

The AML mainly operates from the mining town of Yekepa in Liberia’s northeastern Nimba County and the port city of Buchanan in Grand Bassa County.

In March this year, Liberia received 96,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses shipped via the COVAX initiative, a partnership between CEPI, Gavi, UNICEF and WHO.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the arrival of the vaccines in Liberia is part of the historic step towards achieving the goal of equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines globally, in what will be the largest vaccine procurement and supply operation in history. This delivery is part of a first wave of shipments that will continue to different countries in the coming days and weeks.

In addition to the vaccines, Liberia also received 97,000 syringes and 600 safety boxes that will be used for the administration and disposal of immunization waste.
