Bill to decriminalize free speech up for public hearing at the Capitol

(Last Updated On: )

Monrovia- Public hearing for the bill seeking the repeal of anti-free speech legislations in Liberia is set to take place on Monday at the Legislature, the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has announced.

The bill titled, an Act to amend the Liberian codes revised, penal law of 1978, seeks to decriminalize speech offenses in Liberia.

The event will commence on Monday morning in the Joint Assembly Chambers of the Legislature on Capitol Hill, according to a PUL press release.

President George M. Weah recently resubmitted the bill to the legislation after attempts to have it pass during the Administration of former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf failed.

The Press Union of Liberia is therefore inviting all stakeholders including editors/heads of media institutions, reporters, members of the civil society, academics and government officials to the history making event.

Meanwhile, the Press Union of Liberia is kindly requesting broadcast institutions to provide live coverage of the hearing.

The PUL highly appreciates the presence of Liberia’s development partners to the public hearing intended to break grounds for ongoing efforts being exerted to enable the legal and operational environment of the media in Liberia and inspire innovations through free expression.

The Union asserts that the Legislative Hearing is very significant to enhancing the output of journalism and must claim the attention of all journalists in Liberia.

Some Liberian professionals, media reform experts, journalists and civil society members are scheduled to speak at the event.
